Slap on the sunscreen and lace up your hiking boots – it’s time to explore the natural beauty of the Texas Panhandle. Just outside Amarillo city limits, you’ll find Palo Duro Canyon, the second-largest canyon in the U.S. With miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and picnicking, Palo Duro and neighboring canyons like Caprock put the “great” in the great outdoors. And be sure to stick around after dark for stargazing in the wide-open Texas sky. On the north side of Amarillo, you’ll find the 610-acre Thompson Memorial Park. This is another great location for hiking and picnicking, plus scenic courses for golfing and disk golfing. You can also make a day of fishing, hunting, and horseback riding at one of our abundant national wildlife refuges and neighboring ranches. Thanks to our beautiful weather virtually every month of the year, you can spend your days in a different scenic locale each day. Find a full list of outdoor attractions and activities here.
The Outdoor Adventurer
Think Texas is all rugged ranchers and tumbleweeds? Think again. Amarillo is living proof that the Panhandle is rapidly becoming a cultural hub. The Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts hosts a wide variety of artists each year, including the Lone Star Ballet. With its precision-engineered acoustics and beautiful architecture, which mirrors the cascades of Palo Duro Canyon, the Center is the perfect place to enjoy a show. High culture and local color also meet at Amarillo’s Pioneer Amphitheater, a vast outdoor venue that has staged the musical Texas for over half a century. And while baseball might not be your idea of fun, keep in mind our new stadium has hosted the Amarillo Symphony. Also, we’re home to the oldest continuously operating theater in the U.S., the Amarillo Little Theatre. Finally, don’t forget about Amarillo’s multiple local theater companies and the Amarillo Botanical Gardens, which hosts the occasional classical concert, as well as abundant exotic flora. You can keep your finger on the pulse on all of Amarillo’s cultural happenings with this regularly updated list.

If your day doesn’t truly start until the sun begins to set, this itinerary may be the perfect match for a night owl like you. Downtown is a hub of activity on any weekend night. To start the evening off right, grab a craft cocktail and check out the view from one of our classy rooftop bars. Heights not your thing? Then disappear into a local speakeasy, where the lights are low and the drinks are surprisingly affordable, or try your luck at a local arcade bar. During the summer months, be sure to check out Amarillo Botanical Gardens’ Music in the Gardens summer concert series every Thursday evening. During the day, you can shop till you drop at Amarillo’s many boutiques. With everything from homegrown antiques to haute couture, you won’t have to go far to find the perfect souvenir (don’t miss historic Route 66, aka 6th Street!) or the perfect finishing touch for your evening attire. High Noon on the Square is a staple of the downtown scene during summer, featuring local vendors, music, and more. And come fall, look out for Jazztober, a weekly outdoor concert series that will get your toes tapping. Use this regularly updated list to make sure you don’t miss a thing.

Spend a weekend in Amarillo and you’ll see why so many families are deciding to make this Panhandle community their home. Located on 610 acres on the north side of Amarillo, Thompson Memorial Park is a great place to gather for a picnic or a round of disk golf – or to let the family pup roam the expansive dog park. It’s also home to Wonderland, our city’s amusement park. Speaking of wildlife, the Park is also home to the Amarillo Zoo, where you’ll find lions, tigers, bears, and more. For an even truer Texas experience, you can also check out the cowboy’s roping skills over at the Tri-State Fairgrounds. Still not tired? Enjoy nine innings and a hotdog at downtown’s new state-of-the-art ballpark, home of the 2019 AA Texas League Champion Sod Poodles. And the Don Harrington Discovery Center, Amarillo’s local science museum, is another prime destination for family-focused, educational fun.
