Tips for Effective Delegation
Delegation is the foundation for growth, and it’s an art, not a science. Once you’ve identified the best resource to support you, follow these guidelines to ensure a smooth handoff.
1
Identify the end result clearly.
Take the time to establish success criteria. This will help you gain clarity around your own expectations and allow the support resource to understand what success looks like from your perspective before they get started.
2
Share the big picture around the task.
A support resource is more effective when they see how they fit into the bigger picture. By sharing this early on, they can make strategic decisions that support your vision. From there, trust their process and approach – it may look different from how you would have approached the task, but yield the same (or better!) results.
3
Be a good communicator.
Delegation is a two-way street. A good assistant can help you figure out the handoff and break down big ideas into delegatable next steps. As tasks are taken over, it’s important to be a clear and communicative partner. Commit to regular communication and feedback as part of your delegation strategy.
